The basic tools of Lean healthcare are similar to those of healthcare itself, and follow the same logical sequence:
Lean healthcare starts with direct observation of an existing process. This overview includes data collection and visualization techniques that help participants evaluate the current approach.
Moving from the overview to detailed observation, participants create diagrams that break down the process into specific, measured steps. Each step is categorized as adding value (facilitating completion of the process) or not adding value (impeding, slowing, or reducing quality of the process). The steps that do not add value are then considered for possible elimination or redesign.
Next participants create new diagrams with previously non-value adding steps either eliminated or changed. With management approval, the group develops an implementation plan and puts the new process into effect.
Staff should monitor the effectiveness of their Lean healthcare solutions over the long term. As new issues arise, the techniques of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment should be applied.
